Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria, Germany. It has about 1.3 Million inhabitants and it's a town of extreme opposites. You will see ancient customs, traditional bavarian costumes and old style beer gardens side by side with progression, prosperity and the newest trends in lifestyle and culture. In Bavaria and Germany as well, Munich is known for its high living standards. The rents are comparatively high and the jet set is feeling comfortable in hip clubs and noble restaurants. The town is also a media centre, hosting many TV and internet companies as well as publishing houses.

For any Germany vacation, Munich is a great place to visit. Many places of interest can be visited like the Residence, which is one of the greatest castle areas of Europe. Munich is also called the "Rome of Germany" because of it's variety of churches and convents.

One of the highlights is the Church of Our Lady, the town's unmistakable landmark. The atmosphere in Munich is rather cosy for a big city. Many beer gardens and cafes invite to relax and the people tend to be friendly and unhurried.

Munich is also home to one of the biggest parties of the world, the Oktoberfest. About 6 Million people from all over the world meet here every year to celebrate with unique Bavarian beer and traditional German food, like "Brathendl" (roasted chicken) and "Schweinswuerstl" (Bavarian veal sausages).

If you're not happening to be in Munich during Oktoberfest, you can become acquainted with traditional Bavarian beer and food by visiting a traditional brewery or beer garden.

Munich Sightseeing

Look over Marienplatz

Marienplatz Munich

Here is the heart and soul of Munich. Almost every sightseeing tour starts here. Around Marienplatz - in English St. Mary's Square - you have lots of sights and important buildings like the Frauenkirche and the town hall. You can also enjoy the start of your Munich trip at one of many surrounding beer gardens.

St. Mary's Square was originally called "Schrannenplatz". During a cholera epidemic in 1853 numerous Christians pilgrimaged to the column of St. Mary which is right at St. Mary's Square. The people prayed for an end of the epidemic and really soon it came to an end. So in honor of patroness Maria, the square's name was changed to Marienplatz.

Victuals Market Bavaria

The Victuals Market in Munich developed from a usual farmer's market to a famous market place for delicacies and tasty morsels. It started in 1807 as the so called "Kraeutlmarkt" (Herbal Market). Soon, it became bigger and the name was changed to Victuals Market (victual is the latin word for food).

The products here are of the finest quality and the prices tend to be accordingly high. The market is real big. On an area of over 22,000 m² 140 merchants offer their goods. That includes flowers, venison, poultry, pork, spices, cheese and fish as well as local and exotic fruits, juices and other stuff.

In spring and summer the entire market place turns into the biggest beer garden of the city when the sourrounding pubs and taverns bring out the seats in front of their doors.

You won't find a bigger market place for delicacies throughout Germany and maybe whole Europe. Most of the merchants open from 8 am until 8 pm. You should not miss the Victuals Market when visiting Munich on your Germany vacation.

English Garden Munich

This is for the inhabitants of Munich Germany what the Central Park is for the New Yorker - A place to relax, go in for sports, hang out and forget the drab monotony of everyday life. With a size of 373 hectare, the English Garden of Munich is the biggest inner city park of the world. In comparison, the Central Park in New York City has a size of 343 hectare. The English Garden in Munich offers free time activities of all kinds. In summer you might want to take a long walk or a bike tour. You can also take a boat and relax on one of the little lakes. If you get thirsty, many beer gardens throughout the park invite for refreshments and snacks.

Also in winter there is plenty to do in the English Garden. A walk through the snow-covered scenery can be very romantic. You can also do ice skating on some of the lakes. From some places, you have great views over the whole town. No matter what time you are in Munich Germany, the English Garden invites you to relax from your tiring sightseeing tours and should not be missed.

Nymphenburg Palace Munich

This baroque masterpiece served the Bavarian rulers of Baroque and as summer residence. It is located in the western part of Munich and was built in 1664. The building is connected to an impressive garden designed by the famous landscape gardener Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell.

Nymphenburg Palace is one of the most famous sights in Munich. The building also contains the museum of Marstall, showing magnificient carriages and other attractions. It also houses several outstanding collections and galleries. For example a porcelain museum, the museum of human Munich and a botanic garden. There is something to watch for everybody at Nymphenburg Palace.

Originally, the palace was a present from Ferdinand Maria to his wife Henriette Adelaide to celebrate the birth of their son. The son was called Maximilian Emanuel. When Maximilian became the Bavarian ruler himself, he advanced the extension of the palace and ordered the construction of symmetrical buildings connected to the central section by galleries. A good decision!
