St. Mary Church Stralsund

St. Mary is the biggest church of Stralsund and simply a great example of medieval architecture. Situated in the Old Town of Stralsund, St. Mary Church was the highest building during the time span from 1625 to 1647 because of its magnificent tower overtopping anything else with a height of 151 meters. It would have been the highest building of the world for many more years, but in 1647 the top of the tower was destroyed by a thunder.

Today, the tower is ‘only’ 108 meters high and has an observation deck on top. From here, you have a great view over the rest of the town of Stralsund.

Stralsund Events

Festival of Wallenstein

The so called Wallensteintage (Days of Wallenstein) bring history alive each and every year in summer at the beautiful town of Stralsund. This historical festival has a long tradition. It celebrates the successful resistance of the people of Stralsund against the fierce Commander Wallenstein and his imperial forces. This event took place during the 30 Year’s War in 1628 in the Baroque period. From May 13 until July 21 Wallensteins troops besieged the town of Stralsund and its citizens with no success.

To celebrate this event in an appropriate manner the festival itself sends Stralsund and its visitors back to the Baroque – but in a positive way. A historical parade gives the Stralsund visitor an impression of life during the 17th century in Germany. Also the battle of Stralsund against Wallensteins forces is staged by local actors at the St. Jacob's Church with historical fight scenes and original weapons - a real spectacle for the visitor.

There are also medieval markets around the Old Town with craftsmen and merchants offering their goods and snacks. Numerous parties in Stralsund let you end the day in style.
